Academic Units

History

    The department originated from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine in the Taiwan Provincial Institute of Agriculture in 1954. In 1965 it was divided into two separate departments. The Department of Veterinary Medicine offered four- and six-year college curriculum for senior and junior high school graduates, respectively. From the institute was upgraded to the polytechnic institute in 1991, the department offered two- and five-year bachelor,s programs for the junior college and high school graduates, respectively. In 1997 the institute was promoted to the university, and a master,s program was offerd in the same year. In 2000 a master,s program for contiuing education was offered. In 2001 a doctoral program was added.

 

Degree programs

  1. Five-year bachelor,s program is offered to those who are vocational high school graduates or high school graduates with one year of professional experience.
  2. Master,s program is offered to those who have got bachelor,s degree in veterinary medicine or the related fields such as medicine, agriculture, science, pharmacy.
  3. Doctoral program is offered to those who have got master,s degree in veterinary medicine or the related fields as the master,s program.
  4. Master,s program for continuing education is offered to those who are working as a veterinarian.

 

Features

    The objectives of the department are to enable the student to become acquainted with veterinary knowledge and techniques to prepare for clinical service, to promote healthy conditions for domestic animals, poultry, wild animals and aquatics, and to interrelate veterinary medicine and socioeconomic necessity. Veterinary medicine is a combined science in the concepts and methods of modern biomedical technology. In addition to basic knowledge, the program for the veterinary student focuses on applied technology and clinical practice.

 

Faculty

    The department has in total 18 members of academic staff, including seven professors, five associate professors, and six assistant professors. Among them, seventeen members have doctoral degree and two master’s degrees. Besides, ten part-time faculties join in specialized teaching.

 

Facilities

    The total constructed area of the department is about 14,018 ㎡, including two main teaching buildings and one animal hospital. Besides, one diagnostic center for animal disease, three quarantine stall for quarantine of import animals, two transmission electron microscope, three scanning electron microscopes, one CT scan, and advanced equipment necessary for research or diagnosis in veterinary medicine were also set in this area. According to various areas of research, seventeen research laboratories were established by our staff.

The department provides more than 10 kinds of scholarships for outstanding students to apply.

 

Perspectives

    The design and equipment of department building have followed the college of veterinary medicine in United Kingdom and United States. Continual efforts are made to provide the best veterinary clinical training and research, to promote the service function for veterinary medicine and animal husbandry in Taiwan, and to enhance the international cooperation.

History 

The Graduate Institute of Animal Vaccine Technology was established in 2005, first of its kind in Taiwan. As an important way of controlling diseases, vaccines are one of the most ideal choices of methods to combat the over-use of antibiotics. In 2003, the Center for Vaccine and Adjuvant Technology was established and subsequently to train talents in this field and to improve the competitiveness of the industry, the GIAVT was inaugurated. The faculty currently consists of three associate professors and five assistant professors, each with significant achievements in the field of vaccine development, along with cooperation with the vaccine industry.

 

Educational goals 

Education is focused on infectious diseases of animals and the development of vaccines. Vaccinology, Adjuvants and Vaccine Engineering are mandatory classes, with supplementary classes such as pathogenesis, infectious diseases, immunology and other fundamental classes. The goal is to train students with social responsibility, professionalism and international perspective in response to the demand of the vaccine industry today.

  2. Industrial application of developed technology is an important goal. The transfer of technology from the laboratories to the production line ultimately validates the research efforts invested.
  3. Provide a conduit for teacher/student interaction in order better train students, fulfilling the task of a technical education.
  4. To fully implement the technical transfer of developed vaccine technology.

 

Curriculum

Facilities 

Facilities of the Institute include the Pilot Vaccine Production Plant, the Research Center for Vaccines and Adjuvants, Animal Research Center. Equipments include: 30L and 10L fermenters, antigen centrifuge, automatic titrator, low temperature concentrator, lyophilizer, roller bottle incubators, emulsifier, protein purification, nanofluidizer and other vaccine production-related equipments.

 

Faculty 

There are twelve professors at the Institute: 6 professors, 2 associate professors and 4 assistant professors. Faculty members are directly involved in vaccine and adjuvant research, with extensive publication and patents.

 

Career Prospects 

Graduating students may choose to continue research work in academic institutions, research units, or vaccine companies. Some elect to work in hospitals, the public sector or private companies. Other areas include feed companies, drug manufacturers, equipment companies, farms and other vaccine-related companies.

History

The Institute of Wildlife Conservation was established in 2001, as the only institution focusing on wildlife in Taiwan. The predecessor of our institute, Department of Wildlife Conservation Technology, was a two-year undergraduate program and upgraged to a graduate program for the new academic mission of our institution. 

Features

Wildlife conservation has become an important environmental issue recently worldwide, as well as in Taiwan. Endowed with diverse fauna and flora, well-trained wildlife specialists are increasingly demanded in Taiwan, especially in environmental administration and enforcement agencies, management of protected areas and natural resources, education and research institutions. The objectives of our institute are to help graduate students to familiar with various skills required for the successful implementation of conservation, such as administration in wildlife conservation, management on wildlife populations and their habitats, foundation of man-power for wildlife researches, and integration of stakeholder and participators in nature resource management. Furthermore, actions of preservation, maintenance, sustainable use, restoration and enhancement on threaten or endangered wildlife is expected to improve the proximal and sustainable benefits for people on the island and adjacent regions.

Curriculum

Courses in our institute are designed to emphasize both of the critical knowledge and practical ability for field researches and emperical skills in wildlife conservation and management. The theoretical courses will cover various fields of animal biology (e.g., mammalogy, ornithology, and herpetology), landscape ecology, wildlife population ecology, behavior ecology, conservational biology, and others. The applied courses are diverse in disciplines, such as international affair on natural conservation, human dimensions of natural resources management, wildlife habitat management, ecosystems management, and wildlife damage management. It specifically focuses on the conservation and management of non-marine megafauna, such as raptors, carnivores, primates, and reptiles.

Degree of Programes

Our institute offers a M.S. graduate program in wildlife, mainly focusing on non-marine vertebrates. As a multi-disciplinary science, which includes human dimension, natural resource management, environmental science, recreation tourism, agriculture and social science, our program of wildlife conservation will open to the students from various backgrounds. Candidates for the M.S. degree must complete at least 30 credits, and five credits in required courses (Seminar, Wildlife Research, and Practice of Wildlife Research) must be included. A qualified master thesis (6 credis), in combination with oral exam, must be accomplished in 4 years to fulfill the graduation requirement.

Facilities

Our institute has included biological laboratories, an animal specimen storage house, a laboratory of automated wildlife data collection, a wildlife product identification laboratory, Wildlife Management Information Center (Taber’s Library), a 4-hectare Pingtung Rescue Center for Endangered Wild Animals (PTRC). Recently, an experimental wetland for the rehabilitation of a rare frog species is also transferred to our institute.

Perspectives

Our objectives include developing connections with departments of top universities in America and Europe to foster research and cultivate needed specialists. To augment science and technologies to include conservation in Taiwan, the development of our institute emphasizes Taiwan’s dedication to study of wildlife ecology, development of methodologies for wildlife data collection and analysis, restoration of small populations, designing breeding technologies, controlling wildlife damage, management of ecosystems, understanding the human dimensions of conservation, and promotion of conservation concepts in the public. To enhance academic interactions as well as wildlife conservation, we are also in frequent communication with colleagues and institutes in nearby Asian countries.
